Discover your sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign — the "big three" of your astrological birth chart.
What is a birth chart and why does it matter?
A birth chart — also called a natal chart — is essentially a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It maps the positions of the sun, moon, and planets across the twelve zodiac signs and twelve houses. Astrologers have been casting these charts for over 2,000 years, dating back to ancient Babylon and Greece.
Modern Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is aligned to the seasons rather than the constellations. The three most important placements are known as your "big three":
- Sun sign: Your core identity, ego, and the traits you grow into over your lifetime. This is what most people mean when they say "I'm a Leo" or "I'm a Scorpio."
- Moon sign: Your emotional world, instincts, and how you process feelings. The moon moves through each sign roughly every 2.5 days, so your moon sign depends on the exact date (and sometimes time) of birth.
- Rising sign (Ascendant): The zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time and location. It shapes your outward personality, first impressions, and physical appearance. The ascendant changes sign every ~2 hours, which is why birth time matters so much.
- Elements: Each sign belongs to one of four elements — Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), or Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Your dominant element reveals a lot about your temperament.
