How Canberra Matrix Works
The Canberra Matrix is basically the ACT’s way of ranking applicants for nomination. You claim points across a range of categories, then invitation rounds decide who actually gets picked. Higher is better, but only in context.
The catch is people confuse “points claimed” with “nomination guaranteed”. They are not the same thing. The Matrix is a ranking tool, not a promise.
What the points usually look at
- Residence in Canberra or the region
- Employment and occupation details
- Study history
- Partner factors
- Other ACT-linked criteria
Different streams and applicant types can be treated differently, which is why copying someone else's score without copying their profile tells you almost nothing.
Why the same score does not mean the same outcome
A score of 80 in one occupation might be competitive. In another, it might be ordinary. Demand matters. Invitation rounds matter. Who else is in the pool matters. This is where most get caught.
What to do before you submit anything
Work out your score cleanly. Be honest about what you can actually claim. Then compare your profile with the current ACT settings and recent invitation patterns. Guessing is how people waste months.
