If you want the short answer, a typing speed around 40 to 50 words per minute is perfectly normal for office work. Around 60+ WPM is strong. Once you get into the 80+ WPM range, you are properly quick.

The catch is raw speed is not the whole game. A “fast” typing score with messy accuracy is basically fake speed. If you are constantly fixing errors, your real output is worse than the number looks.

Most typing tests calculate words per minute using five characters as one word. So if you type 250 characters in a minute, that gets counted as 50 WPM. It is a standard shortcut, not a perfect reflection of how people actually write.
