🧱 Brick & Block Calculator
Calculate bricks or concrete blocks, mortar bags, and pallets for any wall. Subtract openings for doors and windows.
How to calculate bricks and mortar
The standard Australian brick (230 × 110 × 76 mm) when laid in stretcher bond with 10 mm mortar joints covers about 50 bricks per square metre of wall face.
Quick reference
- Single skin: One brick thick (110 mm). Used for fences, garden walls, and veneer cladding.
- Double brick: Two bricks thick (220 mm). Older Australian homes were typically double brick — excellent thermal mass.
- Concrete blocks: 390 × 190 × 190 mm, 12.5 blocks per m². Common for retaining walls and commercial construction.
- Mortar: Approximately 1 bag (20 kg) per 30 bricks. Pre-mixed mortar bags are available at hardware stores.
🏗️ Fun fact: The standard Australian brick size was established in 1966 at 230 × 110 × 76 mm. Australians use approximately 1.7 billion bricks per year.
