Countdowns and Australian events worth counting to
A countdown timer is one of the simplest but most psychologically powerful tools — the shrinking number creates urgency, anticipation, and focus. This is why they're used for everything from rocket launches to New Year's Eve.
Australia has a rich calendar of events worth counting down to:
- New Year's Eve (31 Dec): Sydney's Harbour fireworks are one of the world's most-watched New Year's events, typically broadcast to over a billion viewers.
- ANZAC Day (25 Apr): One of Australia's most significant national days — dawn services are held across the country and at Gallipoli, Turkey.
- Melbourne Cup (first Tuesday in November): "The race that stops a nation." The entire country pauses for the 3-minute race, and Melbourne gets a public holiday.
- AFL Grand Final (late September): The most-watched sporting event in Australia annually, played at the MCG. Melbourne's public holiday for the Friday before is genuinely unique in world sport.
- Tax time (1 July): The start of the new financial year — when superannuation rates reset, tax changes take effect, and Australians can lodge their returns.
🦘 Fun fact: The first TV countdown in Australia was broadcast in 1974 — the legendary music show "Countdown" on the ABC, which launched the careers of INXS, Kylie Minogue, Midnight Oil, and essentially every major Australian artist of the 1970s and 80s. Nothing to do with timers, but the name is memorable.
