Why does wastage matter?
Flooring always requires more material than the floor area due to cuts at walls, doorways, and pattern alignment. The lay pattern significantly affects waste.
- Straight lay (parallel to walls): Lowest waste, 5% buffer usually sufficient.
- Diagonal (45°) or herringbone: Significantly more cuts — 10–15% wastage is standard.
- Larger rooms waste less proportionally than smaller rooms with more edges.
🌲 Fun fact: Hybrid flooring — a rigid-core plank with a vinyl wear layer — has overtaken laminate as Australia's most popular floating floor. It's waterproof, durable, and easier to install than timber.
