GPA in Australia โ it's not like the US
Australia doesn't use the American 4.0 GPA system. Most Australian universities use their own internal grading scales, though they broadly follow the standard HD/D/C/P/F pattern set out in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
The most common Australian GPA scale uses 7 points (7 = High Distinction, 4 = Pass), but a 4-point scale is also used at some institutions. If you're applying for postgraduate study or scholarships, always check which scale the receiving institution expects.
- 7-point scale (common): 7 = HD (85%+), 6 = D (75โ84%), 5 = C (65โ74%), 4 = P (50โ64%), 0โ3 = various fail grades.
- 4-point scale: Some universities map HD = 4.0, D = 3.0, C = 2.0, P = 1.0 โ closer to the US system but still different.
- Weighted GPA: Multiplies each grade by the unit credit points, then divides by total credit points. This means a failed core unit has more impact than a failed elective if it carries more credit.
- Honours entry: First Class Honours (H1) typically requires a WAM (Weighted Average Mark) of 70%+ or GPA equivalent. Requirements vary by university and faculty.
๐ฆ Fun fact: Australia has 43 universities โ a lot for a country of 26 million people. Roughly 1.6 million students are enrolled in higher education. Australia is also one of the top destinations for international students globally, with education being one of the country's largest export industries.
