Australia Post postage rates — how they work

Australia Post is the country's government-owned postal service, delivering to more than 12 million addresses nationwide. Domestic postage uses flat-rate pricing — meaning it costs the same to send a parcel from Sydney to Parramatta as it does from Sydney to Perth. The only location-based surcharge applies to rural and remote areas.

Pricing is determined primarily by parcel size and weight. Letters are the cheapest option for flat items under 500g, while parcels are categorised into small (up to 500g), medium (up to 3kg), and large (up to 5kg). Anything heavier or larger may require a custom quote.

🦘 Fun fact: Australia Post delivers to more than 12 million addresses across 7.6 million square kilometres — including some of the most remote communities on Earth. A letter to a cattle station in outback Queensland travels further than a letter from London to Moscow.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to send a parcel in Australia?

Domestic parcel rates start at approximately $9.30 for a small parcel (up to 500g) with regular delivery. Medium parcels (up to 3kg) cost around $13.40 and large parcels (up to 5kg) cost around $18.50 for regular delivery. Express delivery adds roughly $5–$8 depending on the parcel size. Rural and remote destinations attract a 15% surcharge.

How long does Australia Post take to deliver?

Regular delivery within the same state typically takes 2–4 business days, while interstate regular delivery takes 3–6 business days. Express Post delivers in 1–3 business days for most domestic destinations. Rural and remote areas may take longer. Australia Post does not guarantee delivery timeframes for regular mail.

What is the difference between regular and express post?

Regular post is the standard, cheapest option with delivery in 2–6 business days and no delivery guarantee. Express Post is a premium service with 1–3 business day delivery and includes a money-back guarantee if the item doesn't arrive by the expected date. Express Post also offers optional signature on delivery for an additional $3.50.

Does Australia Post charge more for interstate delivery?

No. Australia Post uses flat-rate pricing for domestic parcels and letters — the cost is the same whether you're sending within your state or across the country. The only surcharge is for rural and remote destinations, which adds approximately 15% to the base price.
