Australia Post postage rates — how they work
Australia Post is the country's government-owned postal service, delivering to more than 12 million addresses nationwide. Domestic postage uses flat-rate pricing — meaning it costs the same to send a parcel from Sydney to Parramatta as it does from Sydney to Perth. The only location-based surcharge applies to rural and remote areas.
Pricing is determined primarily by parcel size and weight. Letters are the cheapest option for flat items under 500g, while parcels are categorised into small (up to 500g), medium (up to 3kg), and large (up to 5kg). Anything heavier or larger may require a custom quote.
- Regular vs Express: Regular post delivers in 2–6 business days with no guarantee. Express Post offers 1–3 business day delivery with a money-back guarantee if the item is late — making it the better choice for time-sensitive mail.
- Signature on delivery: For an additional $3.50, you can require the recipient to sign for the item. This is recommended for valuable items or when you need proof of delivery.
- Rural surcharge: Deliveries to rural and remote areas attract a 15% surcharge on the base postage cost. Australia Post defines "remote" based on postcode — some outer-suburban postcodes are classified as regional.
- Prepaid satchels: Australia Post sells prepaid satchels at fixed prices, which can be cheaper than counter rates for frequent senders. They're available in 500g, 1kg, 3kg, and 5kg sizes.
