How redundancy pay works in Australia

Under the Fair Work Act, employees made redundant are entitled to both notice (or payment in lieu) and severance pay based on their years of service. Small businesses (<15 employees) are exempt from severance pay requirements.

Tax treatment: Part of your redundancy payment is tax-free (called an Employment Termination Payment or ETP). The tax-free limit increases with your years of service. Amounts above the limit are taxed at your marginal rate.

Not covered: This calculator doesn't include accrued annual leave, long service leave, or payment in lieu of notice if you're required to work out the notice period. Always verify your final entitlement with Fair Work or a workplace lawyer.
