How the running record calculator works
A running record usually starts with three numbers: total words, errors, and self-corrections. From that, you can work out the reading accuracy percentage, the error rate, and how often the student noticed and fixed their own mistake.
The rough idea is simple. Accuracy tells you how hard the text was. Error rate tells you how often miscues happened. Self-correction ratio tells you whether the student is monitoring and repairing meaning as they read.

How to read the result
Most teachers use accuracy bands like this: 95% to 100% is usually independent, 90% to 94% is instructional, and below 90% is hard. Useful, but not magic. A child can hit an acceptable percentage and still have poor comprehension, weak fluency, or patchy self-monitoring.
This is where most get caught. A running record is one part of the picture. Use it with comprehension notes, phrasing, retell, and what the student actually does when meaning breaks down.
Example
If a student reads a 120-word passage with 6 errors and 2 self-corrections, the accuracy is 95.0%. The error rate is 1:20. The self-correction ratio is 1:4. That usually points to an independent text on accuracy, with some evidence the student is still noticing and fixing a few errors.
Worth checking before you decide
Teachers count running records slightly differently across systems. Some count repetitions, appeals, or told words in different ways. If your school uses a specific framework, stick to that rule set so your numbers stay comparable.
