Splitting bills in Australia
Australia has a relatively relaxed approach to splitting bills โ it's common and expected among friends, and most restaurants are happy to split the bill or take multiple payments. Some busy venues may ask for a single payment, but this is the exception rather than the rule.
- Tipping: Unlike the US, tipping isn't expected in Australia. Hospitality workers are paid minimum wage (often with penalty rates for weekends and public holidays). Leaving a tip is appreciated but never obligatory.
- PayID: Australia's instant payments system makes settling up trivially easy. Most Australians can receive money via their mobile number โ no BSB/account number needed.
- Service charge: Some venues add a 10โ15% surcharge on Sundays or public holidays to cover penalty rates. This is disclosed on the menu and is legitimate โ it's not a tip.
- Card surcharges: Credit card surcharges are legal in Australia (unlike some other countries). Visa/Mastercard debit and EFTPOS are usually surcharge-free.
๐ฆ Fun fact: Australia was one of the first countries in the world to allow merchants to surcharge credit card payments โ a reform introduced in 2003. The idea was to make card costs transparent rather than hidden in higher prices for everyone. The US only began allowing surcharges in most states from 2013 onwards.
