What are STCs?
Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are a form of government subsidy under Australia's Renewable Energy Target (RET) scheme. When you install an eligible solar PV system, you earn a set number of STCs based on:
- System size (kW) — larger systems earn more STCs
- Zone rating — areas with more sun earn more STCs (NT > QLD > NSW/VIC > TAS)
- Deeming period — how many years until the scheme ends in 2031 (decreases each year)
STCs are typically assigned upfront to your installer, who then passes the value on to you as a point-of-sale discount on your installation cost.
⚠️ The STC scheme ends in 2031. Each year, the deeming period (and therefore the number of STCs) reduces by 1 year. Installing sooner earns more STCs.
